PRXB Exhaust Brakes

Pacbrake manufactures a Pressure Regulated Exhaust Brake (PRXB) that provides comparable performance to an engine brake and has changed the way we think about exhaust brakes.

The problem with exhaust brakes in the past is that as the vehicle slows down, the RPMs drop and you lose backpressure - resulting in a loss of braking power. Pacbrake's PRXB addresses this very issue with a patented valve that is designed to close as the engine RPMs begin to drop. The closing of this valve will maintain engine backpressure and therefore provide constant braking power, especially at the lower to mid-range RPMs where you need it the most.

With global pressures that companies face, tightening budgets and looking at cost saving measures is a must. Our PRXB exhaust brake offers the lowest price for the highest retarding power available, providing you with better pricing options for your supplemental braking needs.

PRXB Mechanics

The patented pressure regulated waste gate on the PRXB butterfly valve automatically adjusts with increasing or decreasing exhaust flow, creating a near constant backpressure throughout the RPM range. This waste gate modulation allows for engine over pressure (Over Speed) protection while delivering maximum retarding horsepower at any RPM.

A typical fixed orifice exhaust brake is RPM dependant and set for maximum back pressure at a set RPM point. Driving above the safe allowable set point can create a valve float situation. Driving below the set RPM point delivers less exhaust brake performance. The PRXB pressure regulated exhaust brake has a much flatter performance curve, preventing over pressure situations and delivering consistent back pressure and braking performance.

By its design the PRXB can hold a higher safe back pressure point than a variable geometry turbo brake. As the above scatter graph illustrates the VGT brake has a high degree of variation at any set RPM point. An engine manufacturer must factor this variation into its performance. The PRXB exhaust brake has only a two (2) PSI variation in its performance. This allows OEMs to set the maximum RPM point higher without danger of over pressuring the engine. The PRXB also outperforms the VGT in performance at the lower RPM range (1200-1800RPM). The result is a more reliable and complete braking solution.

13 Liter Graph

The PRXB represents the best value in terms of retarding horsepower per dollar spent. With a properly configured engine, the PRXB can deliver similar performance of that of an engine brake. The above graph shows how at only 200 more RPM the PRXB can generate the same retarding horsepower as an engine brake but at one third the cost, one quarter the weight, and one tenth of the development time.
